Dimitris Sideridis, Head of International at Skroutz, on strategic expansion, local market insights, and driving innovation in the Balkan eCommerce landscape

Can you share your journey and the strategic vision behind Skroutz’s expansion into the Balkan region?

Certainly. Skroutz was founded in 2005 and since day one has been committed to simplifying the online shopping experience. Today, it stands as the most popular marketplace in Greece, featuring over 25 million products and more than 6 million registered users.  Recognizing the potential in the Balkan markets, we embarked on an expansion strategy to bring our successful model to neighboring countries. Our journey began with launching Skroutz.cy in Cyprus in 2023, followed by Skroutz.ro in Romania last July. These expansions aim to offer localized services that cater to the unique needs of each market, ensuring a seamless and tailored shopping experience for our users.

What challenges did Skroutz encounter during its expansion into Romania, and how did you address them?

Entering a new market like Romania presented several challenges, including understanding local consumer behavior, establishing relationships with local merchants, and navigating regulatory landscapes. To address these, we conducted extensive market research, partnered with local integrators like easySales and Baselinker to streamline merchant onboarding, and adapted our platform to meet local preferences. This collaborative approach has been instrumental in our successful integration into the Romanian eCommerce ecosystem.

Looking ahead, what are Skroutz’s plans for further expansion in the Balkans?

Building on our successes, we’re setting our sights on Bulgaria as our next key market. Our participation as sponsors in the upcoming Balkan eCommerce Summit in Sofia underscores our commitment to this expansion. We believe that by strengthening our local partnerships and gaining deeper insights into the unique dynamics of each market, we can replicate our success and continue delivering exceptional value to both consumers and merchants across the Balkans.

What insights can you share about the eCommerce landscape in the Balkans, and how does Skroutz plan to navigate it?

The Balkan eCommerce landscape is rapidly evolving, characterized by increasing internet penetration and a growing appetite for online shopping. However, each country has its nuances. Our strategy involves tailoring our services to meet local demands, investing in logistics to ensure prompt deliveries, and offering a wide range of products to cater to diverse consumer preferences. By staying attuned to local trends and maintaining flexibility in our approach, we’re confident in our ability to thrive in this dynamic region.

How does Skroutz ensure a localized experience for users in each new market?

Localization is at the heart of our expansion strategy. This involves translating our platform into the local language, showcasing products relevant to local consumers, and collaborating with local merchants to offer region-specific deals. Additionally, we adapt our payment methods (eg. Cash on Delivery is a popular method in countries like Bulgaria and Romania) and customer support services to align with local expectations, ensuring that users feel at home when shopping on Skroutz, regardless of their location.

What role does innovation play in Skroutz’s growth and expansion efforts?

Innovation is a cornerstone of Skroutz’s philosophy. We continuously invest in technology to enhance user experience, from implementing advanced search algorithms to developing mobile applications that make shopping more convenient. Our commitment to innovation ensures that we not only meet but exceed the evolving expectations of our users, setting new standards in the eCommerce industry.

Can you share any success stories from Skroutz’s expansions that highlight the company’s impact on local markets?

Certainly. In Cyprus, for instance, skroutz.cy quickly became a trusted platform for online shoppers, offering a vast array of products and reliable delivery services. This success is a testament to our ability to understand and cater to local market needs effectively. Similarly in Romania, skroutz.ro receives plenty of positive feedback concerning its fast and reliable delivery, having an average of 2.4 business days with a reliability of more than 95% for deliveries from Greece to any city in Romania.

What advice would you give to other marketplaces looking to expand into the Balkan region?

My advice would be to prioritize understanding the unique characteristics of each market. Invest in local partnerships, respect cultural differences, and be adaptable in your strategies. Success in the Balkans requires a blend of global expertise and local insight, ensuring that your offerings resonate with consumers on a personal level.
