The New Bulgarian University was established on September 18, 1991, by a decision of the Grand National Assembly. NBU received institutional accreditation from the National Agency for Evaluation and Accreditation for the maximum period in four consecutive accreditations – in 2001, 2006, 2012, and 2019. In 2004, NBU was accredited by The Open University, the largest university for distance learning in Europe.
New Bulgarian University is the first higher education institution in Bulgaria to introduce the credit system, training at the specialist, bachelor, and master’s educational levels, as well as distance and continuing education. Individuals of global renown are honorary doctors and professors at NBU, including Richard Rorty, Vera Mutafchieva, Julia Kristeva, Jean-Pierre Vernant, Milcho Leviev, Robert Young, Raina Kabaivanska, Lord Ralph Dahrendorf, Terry Eagleton, Geert Hofstede, architect Daniel Libeskind, maestro Ennio Morricone, and others.
