Interview with Zvezdelina Lacheva, MD of DS Smith Bulgaria

What challenges do eCommerce retailers face with last-mile delivery, and how are they addressing them to meet customer expectations?

E-commerce retailers face rising costs associated with last-mile delivery, including courier fees, returns, and damaged items. These costs account for 41% of an organization’s entire supply chain costs, impacting profitability. Additionally, consumers demand more sustainable packaging, flexible delivery times, and faster delivery, which most retailers struggle to fully satisfy. To address these challenges, some innovative companies are improving their partnerships, operations, and packaging strategies to balance cost management and customer satisfaction.

How are innovators in the eCommerce industry differentiating themselves in response to rising last-mile delivery costs?

Innovators in the e-commerce sector are standing out by adopting key measures across partnerships, operations, and packaging to mitigate the impact of rising costs. They are more likely to conduct regular supplier reviews, implement minimum order values for delivery, and engage external consultancies for packaging improvements compared to pragmatists and traditionalists. These proactive approaches help innovators maintain efficiency and competitiveness in the face of industry challenges.

How are eCommerce innovators adapting to PPWR (Packaging Performance Waste Reduction) regulations?

Innovators in the eCommerce sector are demonstrating strong compliance with the PPWR regulations. A majority (56%) of innovators already use recyclable packaging, and 49% have achieved the maximum 50% empty space ratio. These actions show that innovators are more likely to have made the necessary adjustments to comply with PPWR requirements, ensuring they stay competitive and adhere to evolving regulations.

How can DS Smith help eCommerce businesses in optimizing their packaging processes to comply with regulations like the PPWR and enhance overall efficiency?

DS Smith can help businesses optimize their packaging processes by first identifying consumer priorities, such as reducing damage, cutting costs, and ensuring compliance with regulations like the PPWR. Next, we analyze the current packaging process, considering factors like speed, consumer experience, cost, materials, and packaging variety. Then, we design more efficient alternatives tailored to specific consumer needs, including improved returns processes and reusable packaging. Sustainability is emphasized by aiming to reduce weight, minimize waste, enhance recycling options, and decrease transportation impacts. Testing is crucial before implementing changes to measure consumer reactions, especially avoiding peak periods like the holiday season.
